The “self” is divided into three aspects.

  1. The Rational: Logical; how we are persuaded by science and analytics.
  2. The Spirited: Emotional; how we feel and how those feelings affect the way we act.
  3. The Appetitive: Physical Desires; the primitive carnal instincts of humans that we share with all animals.

Plato believed that humans were ruled by the rational part of the soul, which set us apart from the appetitive beasts.
